Dustin and I started our Whole30 on July 21st. After 30 days, we loosened up our standards a little, but not much. Before yesterday, I had not had any gluten since before July 21st.
But yesterday we went to the Dixie Classic Fair. And, really, how can you go to the fair, and not eat a little fair food? I’m pleased to report that we actually did really well, overall.
It’s funny how things have changed. Instead of seeing signs for deep-fried [insert any random food item here], and thinking “man, I wish we could have that,” we saw the signs and said “ew… I have no desire for that at all!” I guess our palates have adjusted to the healthier lifestyle. So yeah, that was kinda cool.
Also, the sugary stuff tasted almost unbearably sweet. I felt like a hummingbird drinking nectar when we tried the Old-Fashioned Root Beer.
So what was the most un-healthy thing we tried? An apple dumpling. Yes, it was deep-fried in some kind of batter that definitely contained gluten. Surprisingly, it was not that great. And even worse, it made me feel pretty nasty. I didn’t get sick to my stomach, feel light-headed, or even pass out from my brush with gluten (haha), but I almost immediately felt my stomach swelling. Suddenly I felt bloated, and my pants were too tight. It brought back lots of memories of feeling like that after every meal. Now I remember why I don’t need gluten in my life! I was very happy to know that, after leaving the fair, we could go back to feeling great, looking better, and taking better care of our bodies. Dustin agreed.
What was the best thing we tried? Well, the hushpuppy (pictured above) tasted great, but I think the smoothie sample from the Vita-Mix booth was my favorite thing! It was a blend of 9 fresh fruits and vegetables, including kale! I enjoyed it because it tasted great, and I knew it wasn’t adding to my bloat. I was pretty excited to have one Paleo-approved item at the fair – even it it was only about 3 tablespoons- haha!
All in all, we had a wonderful time! And we proved to ourselves that the fair is not just about the deep-fried food… it’s the exhibits, the animals, the weather, the crowds, the rides, the time together, and the Vita-Mix smoothie samples. 🙂
