Cookbook Review: Paleo Slow Cooking

I have been looking forward to this cookbook since I originally heard Chrissy Gower announce that she was writing it.  Slow cooking is so easy and rewarding!  What’s easier than tossing a bunch of whole food ingredients into a pot, turning it on, and coming home to a house that smells great, and a ready dinner.

Since I started eating Paleo-style (over a year ago), I’ve found a few slow cooker recipes here and there, but having a whole cookbook full of them is wonderful!  I will definitely be using my slow cooker more than ever now!

I’m really impressed with this book.  Chrissy begins by telling her story, and she talks alot about her family, and why slow cooking works so well for them.  Robb Wolf also wrote a section entitled “Why Cook At All?” in which the health benefits of cooking versus eating all raw foods are explained.

There is a section on cooking tactics, and a section on the best options for slow cooker ingredients.

And then there are the recipes!!  I had no idea that one could make so many things in a slow cooker!  Chrissy provides breakfast ideas, soups and stews, main dishes, side dishes, and desserts.  Woah.

Last night I made Pesto Chicken.  It was SO easy, and I was thrilled to finish off my basil plant for some delicious pesto.  This dish only needed to cook for four hours, and it smelled amazing!  At dinner time, I sauteed some kale in onions, coconut oil, and garlic, and served the Pesto Chicken on top.  It was so yummy, and we had plenty of leftovers.

What I love about slow cooking is the comforting, easy texture of the food.  Everything is soft, warm, and falling apart.

Here are a few of the recipes I’m most eager to try:

Breakfast:  Slow Cooked Almond Apple Cereal

Soups and Stews:  Classic Chicken Soup

Main Dishes:  Grandpa’s BBQ Beef and NorCal Margarita Chicken

Side Dishes:  Sweet Potato Chips

Dessert:  Chocolate Almond Butter Swirl Brownies

Book Review: Practical Paleo

I am so thrilled for the opportunity to review this book.  Let me begin by telling you that you are seriously missing out on some fantastic Paleo wisdom if you haven’t listened to Diane Sanfilippo and Liz Wolfe on the Balanced Bites Podcast.  These ladies know their stuff, and I have learned a ridiculous amount from them.  I also loved meeting these two in person when they came to my area to teach a workshop, so I have been looking forward to Diane’s new book for quite a while.  I am thrilled and honored to have received an advance copy.

The book was dropped [loudly] on my doorstep one day last week.  When I opened the package, my initial thought was “wow… this thing is no joke!”  The book is BEAUTIFUL.  The photography is stunning.  The design and layout is genius.  And, as I expected, it is packed with great stuff.

From the title, we know that Diane’s mission was to make this Paleo thing practical.  And as you browse through the pages, you will see that she has accomplished that mission.  The book starts out as practical as you can get by answering this question: “what is Paleo?”  In easy-to-understand, not-too-sciency language, Diane explains the why behind this way of eating.  Next she tell you how to do it, and includes instructions on stocking your pantry, food quality, cooking oils choices, ways to understand how standard thinking on “nutrition” is all wrong, etc.

The book gets even more practical with tips for staying Paleo when you go out, and when you travel (this was hugely beneficial for me!).

But don’t worry… she digs deeper, going beyond just “practical,” and explains exactly how food affects the body.  If you want simple explanations to help you understand digestion, leaky gut, blood sugar regulation, and more, then this is the book for you.  She even describes (in a completely hilarious way) how your poop tells secrets about your digestion.

The next section of the book is the one that impressed me the most: the meal plans.  Diane has done her homework, and has prepared specialized, ingredient-driven plans and recipes specifically for people struggling with particular health problems, including autoimmune conditions, thyroid conditions, cancer recovery, neurological issues, and more.  She even has plans for folks concerned with fat loss, or with athletic performance.  And in each of these plans, she explains why you should follow the ingredient recommendations, and how particular ingredients affect particular health issues.  Wow.  Even if you don’t have any of these health concerns yourself, this is such a valuable tool to use to help others get better results from their diet.

And finally… the recipes!  To be honest, I didn’t know that I was getting a book AND a cookbook, so seeing the enormous recipe section was very exciting for me!  I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: the photos are STUNNING (major props to Bill Staley, co-author of Make It Paleo!)  Diane has thought of everything from breakfast foods to treats. I’ve been drooling over these pages since the book arrived, and tonight I finally had a chance to place the book on my recipe stand and use it for dinner!

I made Citrus and Herb Whole Roasted Chicken.  It was super easy to make… just stuff the bird with onions, garlic, and lemon, surround with a few carrots, sprinkle with herbs, and bake!

The house smelled delicious while our dinner took care of itself, and I prepared a big salad to accompany it.

The flavors of the lemon and the herbs really soak into the flesh during the baking process, and the result was so yummy!  We piled the tender cuts high, and throughly enjoyed every bite.  I will definitely be making this one again!

After we finished, I took the little meat that was left on the carcass (we basically devoured most of it), and dropped it into the crock pot for some Mineral-Rich Bone Broth.  I’ve made Diane’s bone broth recipe many times before (it’s on her website here), and it is one of my favorites.  I was thrilled to see that it made the cookbook!

What’s on my list to make next, you ask?  Here are some that I can hardly wait to test: Sweet Potato Pancakes, Quick & Easy Salmon Cakes, Butternut Sage Soup, Baconnaise (yes, you read that correctly!!), and Flourless Mocha-Bacon Brownies (oh goodness…!).

This book will has already been a fantastic addition to my kitchen…

I LOVE THIS BOOK.

.

I do not have kids yet, and I still love this book.

What a perfect way to get your family involved in making good food choices!

Stacy and Matt begin by introducing themselves and their three busy boys.  This Paleo power couple, combined, lost over 200 pounds.  Their commitment to eating whole foods allowed their family to overcome some serious and frustrating struggles in their lives (allergies, bouts of depression, eczema, asthma, digestive issues, and more).  Their experience transitioning their whole family, successfully and enthusiastically, makes them the perfect candidates to share some Paleo wisdom with all the Paleo families out there!

The next part of the book is brilliant.  It’s a story from the perspective of their oldest son, Cole.  It describes why Cole wants to “eat like a dinosaur,” in a way that children can comprehend and enjoy.

And then… THE RECIPES!

Let me tell you something: these recipes are not just for children!  I have more than 1/2 of them earmarked.  Which ones am I most excited to try?  Well, that’s a tough one… but I’d have to say that 50/50 Bacon Burgers, Egg Salad, and Mint Chocolate Chip Ice Cream are the ones that come to mind.

Each recipe has an allergy guide, a key for areas where kids can help, a place to write notes, and a picture from a child’s viewpoint.  And my favorite part: each recipe is introduced with a story or a lesson that is written for kids in the kitchen.

At the end, Matt and Stacy have included a guide to packing lunches, and a section all about “projects” that families can do (or make) together.

This book will be used heavily in my house (kids or not!), and it will serve as a fantastic gift for my Paleo friends who do have children!

What a fantastic tool to encourage your family to get on board with healthy living!

Give this cookbook to your kids, and let your food adventures begin… Paleo-style!

Cookbook Review: Make it Paleo

This review is LONG overdue.

I have been using this cookbook for months, and I’ve made a ton of the recipes.  I knew that I loved it, but this past weekend (on our Weekend Getaway) I discovered just how much I love it.  On a peaceful, rainy afternoon in the mountains, I curled up with a blanket in a reclining chair, coffee in hand, and read this cookbook from cover to cover.

Who reads cookbooks like they’re novels?  Me; that’s who.

And this food novel is beautiful…

Beautifully written, beautifully photographed, beautifully compiled.  If I could choose one word to describe this cookbook, it would be “romantic.”  As I read it, I felt peaceful, comfortable, and a little reminiscent.  The authors take so many familiar, classic recipes and “make them Paleo.”  And the best part?  Almost all of them are incredibly simple and easy to make.

It is clear that Bill and Hayley poured their hearts into this collection of recipes.  There are stories or memories behind most of them, and they provide variations and cooking tips throughout.

My favorite recipes in the book [so far] are Bill and Hayley’s famous Chocolate Chip Cookies, and their amazing Coconut Flour Pancakes.  I am also really excited to try the Mint Lamburgers, Chicken with 40 Cloves of Garlic, Red Curry Chicken Skewers, and so many others.  I’m actually considering doing a “Julie and Julia” type of challenge with this cookbook.  It’s that good.

In addition to the fantastic cookbook, I am really impressed with Bill and Haley.  From the way they communicate on their Facebook page, to the language of their blog, they just seem real.  They aren’t pretentious; they just genuinely want people to eat healthfully AND heartily.

Well Fed, Indeed.

Let me begin by saying that I absolutely love Melissa Joulwan.  Since the beginning of my own Paleo journey, her blog has been a huge source of inspiration, ideas, and amazing recipes!  My husband is particularly grateful for her spicy okra recipe… it’s one of his FAVORITES!  When I heard that she was producing a cookbook, I knew that it would one day grace my Paleo shelf (I cannot wait to get my softcover copy!).

I love Melissa’s style… she writes her blog and her cookbook with sass, spunk, humor, and tons of energy.  It is obvious that she is passionate about eating clean, which is why her new cookbook, Well Fed, is so amazing.

It is really more than a cookbook.  As I scrolled through the beautifully-designed pages, full of photos that are sure to make your mouth water, I was so impressed by all the information Melissa provides!  There is much to be learned, as well as much to be made.  She even gives tips on how to make paleo-life easier (the weekly cook-up, shopping trip examples, pantry staples, etc.), a subject which is near and dear to my heart… and the purpose of my own blog and eBook.

My favorite part of Well Fed is that each recipe comes with so much!  Not only do you get a magical combination of ingredients that will make your taste-buds SING, you also get a note from Melissa about each recipe, projections for how much time each recipe will take to make, variations and/or pairing suggestions for each recipe, and even places for you to write your own notes (I usually fill up the margins of my favorite cookbooks with notes… now I have my own little spot to write- special!!!).

I also love that so many parts of the world are represented in the Well Fed recipes.  Whether you are in the mood for indian, southwestern, chinese, italian, mexican, or even good ol’ southern comfort foods, Melissa has you covered.

Do yourself a favor, and get yourself an early Christmas gift.  Trust me, you will be Well Fed.
