Cookbook Review: Paleo Slow Cooking

I have been looking forward to this cookbook since I originally heard Chrissy Gower announce that she was writing it.  Slow cooking is so easy and rewarding!  What’s easier than tossing a bunch of whole food ingredients into a pot, turning it on, and coming home to a house that smells great, and a ready dinner.

Since I started eating Paleo-style (over a year ago), I’ve found a few slow cooker recipes here and there, but having a whole cookbook full of them is wonderful!  I will definitely be using my slow cooker more than ever now!

I’m really impressed with this book.  Chrissy begins by telling her story, and she talks alot about her family, and why slow cooking works so well for them.  Robb Wolf also wrote a section entitled “Why Cook At All?” in which the health benefits of cooking versus eating all raw foods are explained.

There is a section on cooking tactics, and a section on the best options for slow cooker ingredients.

And then there are the recipes!!  I had no idea that one could make so many things in a slow cooker!  Chrissy provides breakfast ideas, soups and stews, main dishes, side dishes, and desserts.  Woah.

Last night I made Pesto Chicken.  It was SO easy, and I was thrilled to finish off my basil plant for some delicious pesto.  This dish only needed to cook for four hours, and it smelled amazing!  At dinner time, I sauteed some kale in onions, coconut oil, and garlic, and served the Pesto Chicken on top.  It was so yummy, and we had plenty of leftovers.

What I love about slow cooking is the comforting, easy texture of the food.  Everything is soft, warm, and falling apart.

Here are a few of the recipes I’m most eager to try:

Breakfast:  Slow Cooked Almond Apple Cereal

Soups and Stews:  Classic Chicken Soup

Main Dishes:  Grandpa’s BBQ Beef and NorCal Margarita Chicken

Side Dishes:  Sweet Potato Chips

Dessert:  Chocolate Almond Butter Swirl Brownies

Book Review: Practical Paleo

I am so thrilled for the opportunity to review this book.  Let me begin by telling you that you are seriously missing out on some fantastic Paleo wisdom if you haven’t listened to Diane Sanfilippo and Liz Wolfe on the Balanced Bites Podcast.  These ladies know their stuff, and I have learned a ridiculous amount from them.  I also loved meeting these two in person when they came to my area to teach a workshop, so I have been looking forward to Diane’s new book for quite a while.  I am thrilled and honored to have received an advance copy.

The book was dropped [loudly] on my doorstep one day last week.  When I opened the package, my initial thought was “wow… this thing is no joke!”  The book is BEAUTIFUL.  The photography is stunning.  The design and layout is genius.  And, as I expected, it is packed with great stuff.

From the title, we know that Diane’s mission was to make this Paleo thing practical.  And as you browse through the pages, you will see that she has accomplished that mission.  The book starts out as practical as you can get by answering this question: “what is Paleo?”  In easy-to-understand, not-too-sciency language, Diane explains the why behind this way of eating.  Next she tell you how to do it, and includes instructions on stocking your pantry, food quality, cooking oils choices, ways to understand how standard thinking on “nutrition” is all wrong, etc.

The book gets even more practical with tips for staying Paleo when you go out, and when you travel (this was hugely beneficial for me!).

But don’t worry… she digs deeper, going beyond just “practical,” and explains exactly how food affects the body.  If you want simple explanations to help you understand digestion, leaky gut, blood sugar regulation, and more, then this is the book for you.  She even describes (in a completely hilarious way) how your poop tells secrets about your digestion.

The next section of the book is the one that impressed me the most: the meal plans.  Diane has done her homework, and has prepared specialized, ingredient-driven plans and recipes specifically for people struggling with particular health problems, including autoimmune conditions, thyroid conditions, cancer recovery, neurological issues, and more.  She even has plans for folks concerned with fat loss, or with athletic performance.  And in each of these plans, she explains why you should follow the ingredient recommendations, and how particular ingredients affect particular health issues.  Wow.  Even if you don’t have any of these health concerns yourself, this is such a valuable tool to use to help others get better results from their diet.

And finally… the recipes!  To be honest, I didn’t know that I was getting a book AND a cookbook, so seeing the enormous recipe section was very exciting for me!  I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: the photos are STUNNING (major props to Bill Staley, co-author of Make It Paleo!)  Diane has thought of everything from breakfast foods to treats. I’ve been drooling over these pages since the book arrived, and tonight I finally had a chance to place the book on my recipe stand and use it for dinner!

I made Citrus and Herb Whole Roasted Chicken.  It was super easy to make… just stuff the bird with onions, garlic, and lemon, surround with a few carrots, sprinkle with herbs, and bake!

The house smelled delicious while our dinner took care of itself, and I prepared a big salad to accompany it.

The flavors of the lemon and the herbs really soak into the flesh during the baking process, and the result was so yummy!  We piled the tender cuts high, and throughly enjoyed every bite.  I will definitely be making this one again!

After we finished, I took the little meat that was left on the carcass (we basically devoured most of it), and dropped it into the crock pot for some Mineral-Rich Bone Broth.  I’ve made Diane’s bone broth recipe many times before (it’s on her website here), and it is one of my favorites.  I was thrilled to see that it made the cookbook!

What’s on my list to make next, you ask?  Here are some that I can hardly wait to test: Sweet Potato Pancakes, Quick & Easy Salmon Cakes, Butternut Sage Soup, Baconnaise (yes, you read that correctly!!), and Flourless Mocha-Bacon Brownies (oh goodness…!).

This book will has already been a fantastic addition to my kitchen…

A Visit to Savory Spice Shop

A few weeks ago, my husband and I were strolling through a Greensboro, NC, shopping center, and came across Savory Spice Shop.  I have never noticed the store before, and since I cook a lot, I’m always interested in good, local sources of ingredients.  We walked inside, and I was immediately flooded with the amazing smell of spice!

There wasn’t a particular scent that stood out… they all seemed to mesh together in a beautiful harmony of flavor.  Being a big-time foodie, I was entranced!

Within moments of walking in the door, we were greeted by Ashley, the Assistant Manager, who gave us a quick tour of the store, and some information on a few of the spices.  She was so welcoming and knowledgeable, and I appreciate that she had lots of experience with most of the spices we saw!

I fell in love with this amazing little store, and decided that I would have to go back for an interview with Ashley!

I made an appointment, and went back to Savory last week.  Again, when I walked in the door I was in scent-heaven.  Amazing.

I could not believe the extent of variety!  Who knew that there are so many types of Paprika?  Ashley told me that paprika is made from ground and dried bell peppers or chili peppers, that it packs a huge amount of flavor, and that it goes on more than just your deviled eggs!  The flavors range from mild to hot, and “Sweet Smoked” is the most flavorful variety.

While at the shop, I learned that Savory Spice Shop is actually a franchise company!  It was started as a mom-and-pop company in Colorado by Janet and Mike Johnston.  This couple wanted to provide high quality herbs and spices at an affordable price.  Their store and website experienced so much success that they began offering franchise opportunities so that more stores could be run locally.

I’ve been in spice shops before, and I’ve ordered several times from online sources, so one of my questions for Ashley was:
.What makes Savory Spice Shop a difference shop than all the other spice shops?

Ashley says that there are several things…

1. Savory provides amazing, personal service.  In Savory shops, you can taste and smell everything before you walk out the door.  The employees are knowledgeable, and they can make recommendations for pairings.  It’s not just a browse-and-buy experience… it’s a personalized shopping experience.

2. The level of quality of Savory spices is remarkable.  If you compare the look and smell of the spices you see at typical grocery stores, the difference is amazing.  All of the spices smelled 100 times better than my bottles at home, and some of them smelled completely different from what I’m used to smelling (in a better, fresher way).

3. Savory spices are ground fresh weekly.  They have a warehouse that only holds enough to stock 3-4 stores in each spice, and they have 20 stores nationwide, so constant, fresh grinding and blending is a MUST.

4. All of the herbs and spices are hand-blended, hand-stirred, and tested.  Savory has foodies working in their warehouses… they taste everything, and test it by cooking with it themselves.

I could definitely tell that Ashley really enjoys her job… she was passionate about it!  One thing she mentioned is how interesting it is to watch people as they smell and taste the varieties.  So often, a smell brings back a memory long forgotten, a taste of some historic day… She told me a story of a woman who smelled one of the amazing cinnamons and burst into tears!  The smell brought back a host of memories of her childhood, and she’d not smelled cinnamon like that since.

Food is emotional and intimate – and the spices are often the main smells and tastes that stand out to us when we cook and eat.

I asked Ashley where the spices and herbs are sourced, and she said that they always have fresh spices because they get them from all over the world!  Savory sources from wherever the particular spice is growing seasonally and economically, and most of the time they come from small farms.  The founders of Savory know many of the owners of the farms that grow the herbs and spices, and they’ve seen the processes from start to finish (from growing to toasting).

I asked Ashley for a few of her favorite spices, and she mentioned these:

Cantanzaro Herbs – a savory blend that you can use for everything! They are a mix of Italian herbs, a little lemon, and some garlic. This blend goes well with nearly every meat or vegetable.

Spiced Vanilla Sugar – this is a sweet blend of sugar, vanilla, and spices.  It works beautifully with spiced pecans, in cream cheese, or in coffee.

Of course, I had to ask about the most expensive items in the store…  Saffron!   Saffron is the most expensive spice in the world, and Savory has all kinds of varieties from which to choose!

Saffron lasts around 7 years or more. It has a lovely tobacco-like flavor to it. The reason this spice is expensive is because harvesting it is back-breaking work… the spice is actually the stigma of crocus flowers!  So pickers must be on hands and knees, and bent over, to carefully gather the spice.  You should never get saffron from a regular grocery store! Unfortunately, a lot of people call turmeric “saffron,” so while you think you’re getting a tasty ingredient, you are really getting a sub-par substitution.

The second most expensive item in the store is the truffle salt.  Truffles actually come from subterranean mushrooms, and they amp up the flavor of anything and everything they contact.

The most underrated spice?  Ashley surprised me with this one!  She says salt!  And it makes sense, if you think about it…  a lot of people just dump salt on everything, or they won’t use salt for anything because they are afraid of sodium (check out this article, by the way!).  But salt is a really important and vital seasoning!  Even on network cooking shows, chefs will crawl all over people for not seasoning the food properly… and the “seasoning” they mean is salt. It is a natural way to enhance flavors, but it should be used delicately and carefully, and you should be sure to taste your food as you add.

Pepper is also underrated.  Pepper brings out the “lower notes” and flavors of your dish, while salt brings out all high, bright notes. Together, these two seasonings make a perfect symphony.

Savory carries many types of salt, from sea salt (from the ocean) to mine salt (from mines).

The most popular spice?  Ashley says that this really depends on what the employees have been using lately. They talk with customers all the time about their favorites, their recent experiences, and their recommendations.  “Pearl Street” has been big one at the Greensboro location lately.  It is great on salmon (marinate it in the fridge, toss it on a cedar plank, then grill it to perfection!). Cinnamons are also big sellers because most people have never smelled cinnamon like this before – it is FRESH and pure, with no added fillers or dyes.

Ashley’s favorite type is Indonesian Cinnamon because it is the sweetest variety.

Curious about how to store your spices?

First of all, they should be kept FAR away from heat!  Are you doing what so many do, and storing your spices above the stove, in a cabinet near the stove, or in an area where there is lots of bright sunlight?  That’s a mistake!  Any light or heat is going to excite the spices and cause them to release their oils, which causes them to release their flavor.

Also, be sure to replace your spices when they start to lose their flavor.  Savory is careful to mark each jar with the date of purchase when you check out so that you can track how long it’s been in your cupboard.

If you have ever complained about the “boring” element of constant meat and vegetables… let me tell you a little secret: spices are the way to keep your food interesting!  Find yourself a Savory Spice Shop, and go experience the wonders of spices from around the world!  Find some new things that you’ve never tried!  Branch out with some different flavors!

Find a store here, or shop online.

One of the best resources for amazing Paleo recipes with lots of SPICE is Melissa Joulwan’s Well Fed (check out my review here).  This cookbook offers amazing suggestions for tons of worldly recipes, and lots of varietal spices are called into play!  In fact, Melissa says “One of the things I love about spices and other seasonings is that, much like a good book, they can take you just about anywhere in the world.

If you are ready to start your collection, I suggest you start at Savory Spice Shop… preferably the store in Greensboro.  :)

HUGE thanks to Ashley Stricker for teaching me so much about the wonderful world of SPICE!

It Starts With Food: My Review

When I checked my mailbox on Friday evening, I found a package that contained Whole9‘s new book, It Starts With Food.  I have to admit that I shrieked [numerous times] in delight, and that I squealed to my husband [numerous times] over how excited I was to read it.

I have a HUGE amount of respect for Dallas and Melissa Hartwig, and I am extremely indebted to them, as my own “Good Food” journey (and thus, this website) began with a Whole30 challenge almost one year ago… which was before I even knew what “Paleo” meant, by the way.  When I heard that they were writing a book, I knew that it would be amazing.  I actually pre-ordered my own copy as soon as it was available for pre-order.  A few weeks later, I got an email from Melissa, asking if I would like a pre-view copy.  Um… YES!  How exciting!

How did I know that the book would be amazing?  Well, mainly because Dallas and Melissa do everything with excellence.  They only make claims that are backed by extensive personal research, they stand firmly on their principles, and they don’t take crap.

I began reading that night (Friday), and I finished the book last night (Monday).  I can sum up my thoughts in one bold statement… are you ready?  Okay, here it is:

.

This is, hands down, the best REAL FOOD book on the market today.

.

Bold, right?  I know.  But I mean every word, and I’ll tell you why below.  But first, let me tell you that I have read almost all the Paleo books out there  (cookbooks included), and I have enjoyed almost all of them.  But It Starts With Food takes the gold medal for so many reasons!

.

Top 15 Reasons I LOVE this Book:

.

1. Dallas and Melissa left nothing out.  Maybe you are like I was in the beginning, and you know that you feel better without dairy/grains/sugar/legumes/etc., but you aren’t sure why you feel better.  So you continue to avoid them, but you cannot explain your reasoning to those around you.  If that is you, you must read this book.  It covers all the “less healthy” foods, and provides plenty of reasons to stay away from them.

2. They make everything easy to understand.  There is a lot of “science-y stuff” that backs up the reasons we should eat this way… and I’m glad!  This means that our food choices are not based on wild claims, government-sponsored programs, or personal agendas!  But science is a tough subject for me, and I do not typically enjoy it.  However, Dallas and Melissa did an outstanding job making sense of it all!  I can confidently proclaim that I understood every sentence in the book, and that it all made perfect sense.  They used a ton of useful analogies, included great illustrations, summarized the tough stuff at the end of each chapter, and described everything thoroughly.  I cannot tell you how happy I was to have so many things suddenly “click” inside my head (“oh, so THAT’S how that works…”).  I used 1.5 entire highlighters as I read.

3. They answer your questions before you have to ask them.  As I was reading, there were so many times I thought “Oh, someone is going to ask about _____.” And then, in the next sentence or paragraph, they’d say “Now, we know what you’re thinking…,” and then address the issue.  It’s like they really do know what you’re thinking!  This is not just a basic “here are the basic facts” book.  It delves deep into the issues, and covers all the related topics that you’ve been pondering for so long.

4. They have not written it as “a Paleo book.”  I absolutely LOVE that Dallas and Melissa have chosen not to brand themselves, or the book, with the “Paleo” name.  They do mention that their ideas fall right in line with the Paleo diet, but they are not defined by it, and I appreciate that!  So many people have suspicions that Paleo is just another fad diet (which is hilarious to me), and it is nice to have a book that is not standing on that platform as a base.

5. They have not written it as “Caveman Diet book.”  This one is huge for me.  I am a Creationist, so while I do believe that Paleo is the natural way that we should eat, I do not believe that it’s because it is how our ancestors ate.  I believe that God created the world, and that He put plants and animals on the earth for our food.  I believe that the way human beings have altered and adjusted His good creation is shameful, and that God knew what was best for us when He created humans and placed them in the midst of plants and animals.  I realize that this is a very different stance than most “Paleo people” take (including Dallas and Melissa), and I’m okay with that.

I love that they based their book on the premise of “biology and the natural patterns of behavior.”  They even have a section in the 2nd chapter that is entitled “Creationists Welcome.”  When I read this section, I was so thrilled!  Finally, a book that doesn’t go on and on about our paleolithic ancestors!  Finally, a book that doesn’t make definitive claims about the origination of the human race!  Finally, a book that gives Creationists the scientific facts that they have been craving, without clouding things up with talk of ancestors!

Explaining the Paleo diet to friends and family has been tough for me because I do not believe in the idea behind the name “Paleo” itself (see how I’ve explained it here).  This is a book that I will gladly pass along to everyone I know… whether they believe in evolution OR creation.

6. They write beautifully.  This may not be important to you, but I absolutely hate reading a book that still requires a red pen.  I am an English major, and, unfortunately, my tendency is to edit everything I read.  I typically find numerous “mistakes” in every book I read, but that was not the case with It Starts With Food.  In fact, I was so excited that I could not find one thing to edit, that my heart dropped when I thought I’d found something.  However, after re-reading the sentence in question, I realized that I was the one who had made the mistake.  Kudos to Dallas and Melissa, and to their editors!  The no-mistake streak continued to the end, and I enjoyed it immensely!

7. They use some fantastic humor.  This is not just science and facts… it is also REAL LIFE, and it is surrounded by humor.  Dallas and Melissa tell some great stories in this book, and those stories related to me on so many hilarious levels!  Just as an example, in the section where they describe how to “build your plate,” they describe measurements in terms of palms (like the palms of your hands).  For protein, they suggest that you have 1-2 palm-sized servings with each meal.  This is the quote that cracked me up: “Also, for the record, these are not your only options.  You’ve also got 1.25 palms, 1.5 palms, 1.942 palms, and every possibility in between.  This should not be overwhelming.  You all have palms.  Choose your protein, look at your meat, look at your palm, call it good.”  HAHA!  Love it.

8. They inspire simplicity.  As you know from the title of my website, I am all about helping people realize that whole-food-eating does not have to be difficult.  Dallas and Melissa underline that fact over and over again throughout the book.  If you come away from it thinking “well, that sounds so hard,” then you have not really read it.  Prepare to have things simplified for you.  This stuff is not hard.

9. They tell it like it is.  Yes, that famous Whole9 tough love is present in their book!  I am a very “black-and-white” person.  I hate excuses.  I believe that you can do anything if you really want to do it.  I don’t respond well to wishy-washiness or weakness.  If you have excuses (“but my kids need their goldfish!”), wishy-washiness (“maybe I’ll try eating good food one of these days…”), or weakness (“but it’s too hard!”), then get ready to get over it!  I was basically shouting “AMEN!” during the entire tough love section.  I have heard just about every excuse in the book, and apparently Dallas and Melissa have as well!

10. They get it.  Even though there is some tough love in the book, Dallas and Melissa write it from a perspective of understanding.  They know that many of these ideas are [tragically] foreign to most of the modern world.  They explain concepts in ways that are easy to grasp, they pre-empt your questions before you even have to ask, and they help you figure out how to get started and KEEP GOING!

11. They give you a clear goal.  Since I started eating this way, I have always encouraged everyone interested to start with a Whole30.  It is the absolutely BEST way to detox your system and learn how specific foods affect you.  This book clearly defines the Whole30 program, provides detailed instructions, and gets you excited to get on board!  I have completed two Whole30‘s in the last year, and I am beyond excited to start another one soon!  If you want inspiration and motivation to get strict and healthier than ever, this book is exactly what you need!

12. They tell you what happens next.  One of the biggest problems I have seen from people who complete any 30-day challenge is that they don’t know what to do when it’s over.  They will either be ultra-paranoid about testing their system with a few things they omitted, or they go hog-wild and binge on everything from pizza to cupcakes.  It Starts With Food provides clear instructions on what to do next… how to re-introduce things and how quickly, and what to expect when you do.  Dallas and Melissa leave you completely equipped to make the most of your 30 days, and beyond.

13. They provide an abundance of resources.  Aside from the fact that the book is dotted with numerous great, practical ideas, Dallas and Melissa compiled some amazing appendices.  You will love their Meal Map (designed by the fabulous Melissa Joulwan), recipes, cooking conversions, cookbook and website recommendations, and suggestions on where to find sources of local meat and produce.

14. They did their homework!  They have 20 pages of master references at the end of the book.  And I’m talking small-print, multiple listings, etc.  This book was not written solely on the basis of opinion.  They have backed it all up with research studies, journals, and well-known authors and scientists.  Amazing.

15. They have challenged me.  I finished the book feeling more enthusiastic than ever about why I eat the way I do (and that’s a big statement for me!).  But the enthusiasm is different this time… Dallas and Melissa have made me more of a purist when it comes to food.  This way of eating is simple, and even more so when you aren’t trying to convert all your old, unhealthy choices into “paleo-friendly” treats.  I am done with that phase of my Paleo life, and, in fact, I have some cleaning up to do on my website.  A lot of the snacks, treats, desserts, etc., that I have too often enjoyed are about to disappear.  Does this sound sad to you?  Well, just wait until you’ve read the book, and you might be just as excited about it!

Aside from my new purist mentality, Dallas and Melissa helped foster a greater appreciation of food itself than I have ever experienced.  I am more eager than ever to find the best sources, prepare it purely and simply, and then give it the appreciation it deserves by enjoying it, undistracted, with those I love.  Beautiful.

.As you can tell, I really enjoyed the book, and I can hardly contain my enthusiasm and gratitude for the effort that Dallas and Melissa put into it (and it was obviously a lot).  This will be a tool that I use in my kitchen, a gift that I give to friends and family, a motivational piece to which I will return, and a guidebook that I will treasure.  This marks the beginning of my NEW Good Food journey, and I am crashing through the starting gate!

I LOVE THIS BOOK.

.

I do not have kids yet, and I still love this book.

What a perfect way to get your family involved in making good food choices!

Stacy and Matt begin by introducing themselves and their three busy boys.  This Paleo power couple, combined, lost over 200 pounds.  Their commitment to eating whole foods allowed their family to overcome some serious and frustrating struggles in their lives (allergies, bouts of depression, eczema, asthma, digestive issues, and more).  Their experience transitioning their whole family, successfully and enthusiastically, makes them the perfect candidates to share some Paleo wisdom with all the Paleo families out there!

The next part of the book is brilliant.  It’s a story from the perspective of their oldest son, Cole.  It describes why Cole wants to “eat like a dinosaur,” in a way that children can comprehend and enjoy.

And then… THE RECIPES!

Let me tell you something: these recipes are not just for children!  I have more than 1/2 of them earmarked.  Which ones am I most excited to try?  Well, that’s a tough one… but I’d have to say that 50/50 Bacon Burgers, Egg Salad, and Mint Chocolate Chip Ice Cream are the ones that come to mind.

Each recipe has an allergy guide, a key for areas where kids can help, a place to write notes, and a picture from a child’s viewpoint.  And my favorite part: each recipe is introduced with a story or a lesson that is written for kids in the kitchen.

At the end, Matt and Stacy have included a guide to packing lunches, and a section all about “projects” that families can do (or make) together.

This book will be used heavily in my house (kids or not!), and it will serve as a fantastic gift for my Paleo friends who do have children!

What a fantastic tool to encourage your family to get on board with healthy living!

Give this cookbook to your kids, and let your food adventures begin… Paleo-style!

My Gut-Healing “Protocol”

If you read yesterday’s post, you found out that I have been having some very frustrating digestive issues lately.  This was difficult for me to admit, because I am striving to be a solid Paleo role model!  However, a lesson learned is a lesson learned, and I decided to share it with all of you (learn from my mistakes, please!).  Thank you for all the wonderful, encouraging comments!  I love the support that the Paleo community offers!

So that you can fully understand what I’m talking about, check out my “Digestion Woes” post.

At the end of that post, I listed several ways that I plan to re-heal my gut (it is definitely feeling more than a little damaged!).  Throughout yesterday, I kept thinking of more and more things I could do to encourage healing.  Now believe me, I am no Chris Kresser, Robb Wolf, or Diane Sanfillippo.  I do not claim to be an expert in the world of health.  I don’t even claim to be an expert in the Paleo community.  BUT… I have listened to all of Robb’s podcasts twice (he would say that I’m a glutton for punishment, but I heartily disagree!), I have listened to a ton of Chris Kresser’s show, I have heard all of the Balanced Bites podcasts, I’ve read Robb’s book twice, I’ve read several other Paleo-oriented health books, and I stay very up-to-date on the websites of all those mentioned above, and more!  So I have probably graduated from the “Stalker of Paleo Experts” course.

That said, let me assure you that the “protocol” below comes from bits and pieces of retained gut-healing tips and strategies that I have learned from the experts!

So here it is… feel free to use what you like for your own health (gut-healing or otherwise!).

Jennie’s Personal Steps to Gut Health

(a three-week program… though most will remain in place even after three weeks)

100% Paleo Diet.  This should go without saying, right?  I agree, but I’m saying it anyway.  Trace amounts of gluten can destroy every effort you make toward healing your gut.  It is the chief of gut irritants.  I’m sure that my involuntary gluten consumption last week contributed to the pain I’m experiencing this week.  Aside from not eating gluten, it just makes sense to eat natural, whole, REAL foods.  This means no sugar, no preservatives, no dairy (although I make exception for local, pastured goat cheese), no alcohol, etc.

No Nuts.  This step may not go for everyone, but I can definitely tell that I have a sensitivity to nuts right now.  As I stated in yesterday’s post, I really over-did it on the nuts over the last few weeks.  When I did a test and left them off my menu for a day, my stomach pain decreased substantially.  If you do not feel that it is necessary to cut out nuts completely, you should at least limit them to around one closed fistful each day (keep in mind that almond butter, almond meal, almond flour, etc., are all made from nuts!).

No Eggs.  This step is definitely more of a personal one for me.  I have noticed that when I have consumed eggs over the last few weeks, I have developed a stomach ache almost right away.  I eat a lot of eggs, so I’m really hoping that I have not developed an egg allergy.  Time will tell…

Three “Square Meals.”  This is a big one for me.  Lately, I have gotten into the habit of skipping breakfast, snacking for lunch, snacking during the afternoon, and then having a big dinner.  This is unacceptable, and not the best way to consume plenty of nutrients.  It’s time to get back on track… a good-size breakfast, a good-sized lunch, and a good-sized dinner will keep me feeling better, and more regulated, all day long.

LOTS of Vegetables.  The reason for this is obvious: vegetables are packed with wonderful nutrients, and they are incredibly low in natural sugars.

Bone Broth.  What else needs to be said, really?  If you have been around the Paleo community long enough, you have heard this idea tossed around a lot.  Aside from the fact that it is incredibly rich in minerals, bone broth is a great way to consume gelatin!  Balanced Bites has the best article I have seen on bone broth. Check it out here.  If you’d like to make some yourself, try my favorite recipe: Quick Pressure Cooker Bone Broth.

No Acidic or Spicy Foods.  My stomach pains have felt like burning, so the thoughts of adding things like tomatoes, chocolate, hot peppers, coffee, or even raw sauerkraut really makes me cry inside!

Limited Fruit.  This is a habit that I want to carry with me from now on.  Fruit is such an easy go-to snack item, but in my life it tends to replace more important foods, if I’m not careful (and I haven’t been careful enough!).  Therefore, when I do eat fruit, it must be surrounded by protein and fat (for example: diced mangos on my fajita salad, topped with guacamole).

More Beef than Chicken.  I know and trust my beef source, Little Creek Ranch.  When we run out of beef, I can definitely tell that I don’t feel quite as great as I usually feel.  So during the next three weeks, we’ll be eating mostly beef… not so much chicken.  And besides that, there are so many amazing health benefits of grass-fed beef!  Check them out here.

Low-Stress Workouts.  During this protocol, I want to put as little stress on my body as I can.  In fact, I’m pretty sure that stress played a big part in the downward spiral that lead me to the place I am right now.  I will still do regular workouts, but they will be more empowering than strenuous.  For more of my thoughts on stress, click here.

SLEEP!  This is important for every area of life… for more information, read this article!  My goal for the next several weeks will be to go to bed EARLY, and get at least nine hours of sleep each night.

Chew Your Food.  Have you ever stopped to think about how quickly you eat?  I know people who seem to swallow their food whole.  I chew, but I don’t really think much about it.  Since all this stomach pain has been happening, I’ve thought a lot more about how much I chew.  Did you know that chewing is the first step in digestion?  Read this fascinating article to learn more.  I heard Chris Kresser talking about this recently, and it really made me think (to listen, click here… in fact, just go ahead and listen to the whole thing right now.  It is amazing).

Cod Liver Oil (Butter Oil Blend) and Beef Liver.  Vitamins, vitamins, vitamins!  All you need to know can be found in this article and this article.

Probiotics, Kombucha, and Fermented Foods.  Good gut health requires that you have a healthy gut flora.  Chris Kresser explains that much better than I ever could… check it out here.

Again, these are the steps that I am taking for my personal gut-healing.  Not all of them will be right for you (although most probably are!).

Overall, I am really excited about getting better.  Dealing with stomach aches on a regular basis has made me realize how much I take my health for granted.  And, as I said in my last post, I am just glad to know that this is in my control!

Take a step toward gut health with me!
