Do you miss your morning cereal?

Do you miss your morning cereal?

So many paleo-people desperately miss their morning “healthy whole grain” cereal.  I really missed it during my first few weeks eating Paleo, but I haven’t thought about it a whole lot since then.

This morning my sister, Katie, told me about this idea for a great morning cereal (pictured above).  She combined berries, slivered almonds, coconut flakes, and cinnamon.  Then she poured “lite” coconut milk over it for delicious feels-like-cereal breakfast (you could also just water down some full-fat coconut milk to thin it out).

I like it.  Thanks Katie!

this is one of my favorite things…it’s such a delight in the morning! I haven’t gotten sick of bacon and egg variations yet, but i do LOVE to have this cereal as a snack or dessert sometimes too!

This was a great treat this morning! I was a 7-Day a week Oatmeal Lover. I can truly say I’m not missing it, but something different from my omelet is nice from time to time!

I definitely prefer full fat milk, almond or coconut. I am finished with low fat diets!

Sharon, I’m with you! Bring on the fat! I do like the “lite” version for this, though, simply because it “feels” more like cereal. Almond milk would be really yummy too!!

I do something similar and add macadamia nuts and use almond milk. It’s so crunchy and delicious not to mention much healthier than boxed cereals. Thanks for sharing!

I eat a similar breakfast almost every day!

I usually make my own cereal in the oven, with similar ingredients as you: To “roast” them and then I eat them in full-fat yogurt (since I eat according to Low Carb High Fat :) ). So good!

    Thanks for a great blog!

This looks great to me. A question, though. I have a friend who has been doing Paleo for a while. It seems she really limits her fruit and when shown a breakfast of fruit and some nuts said it was just like eating a bowl of sugar. I know one wouldn’t eat this during a sugar detox but at what stage could one eat this and it be ok? For this recipe is it adding the coconut milk that makes it better? Also could you tell me an estimate of the ratio of fruit to nuts? I’m trying to learn!

      Hi Cheryl,

Fruit contains a lot of fructose (sugar), so it won’t keep you very full for very long, and it isn’t burned into energy as efficiently as fat and protein. For breakfast, I would definitely recommend having this with a side of bacon or sausage, and definitely coconut milk instead of almond milk (good fat vs. more nuts). I generally use more fruit than nuts with this recipe – maybe 2/3 fruit to 1/3 nuts.

I really limit my fruit and nuts as well… so this is not a breakfast I’d have on a regular basis, and probably not all on it’s own.

Hope this helps! I definitely recommend reading “It Starts With Food,” by Dallas and Melissa Hartwig. It puts all these elements into easy-to-understand language, and gives you a whole new perspective on healthy food.
